Ex-drug addicts get hitched

Tuesday, 26 Aug 2008
An article from The Star Online.

HAPPY mood prevailed at Drop-in Centre in Kuantan, a half-way house for former drug addicts in Jalan Teluk Sisek, where three former inmates held a joint wedding recently.

It was a proud day for Yusri Mohd Noor, 38, Abdul Rashid Long, 32, and Zulhaimi Ibrahim, 37, as the encouraging turnout of guests showed they were not rejected by society and could lead a normal life.

Yusri and his wife Syazariah M. Yunus, 32, Abdul Rashid and Khairul Fauziah Muhammad, 29, and Zulhaimi and Che Azlina Che Soh, 36, were overwhelmed by the reception organised by their friends consisting of former drug addicts and volunteers of the Drug Intervention Community Programme Pahang (DiC Pahang led by its general secretary Khalid Hashim) and its support group Friends of Pahang Drug Intervention Community (FPDiC).

Among the invited guests were Paya Besar MP Datuk Abdul Manan Ismail, state exco members Datuk Wan Adnan Wan Mamat and Shafik Fauzan Shariff, Pahang Anti Drug Agency director Abdul Ghani Abdul Rahman and Pahang Islamic Affairs and Malay Customs Council deputy president Datuk Wan Abdul Wahid Wan Hassan.

Khalid said the expected turnout of 300 guests had doubled.

“I am touched by the support and generosity of the guests including the VIPs. It shows that the hard work of DiC Pahang has produced a good response and is recognised by the public,” he said, adding that the reception was held in conjunction with the weekly Lepak Positif Programme.

Khalid said it was the first time a weeding was held at the centre since it was launched 10 years ago. Yusri and Zulhaimi are attached to the DiC Pahang support service division while Abdul Rashid is involved in the needle and syringe exchange programme. Khalid said the event showed the public that former drug addicts could lead a normal life when given the opportunity.

DiC Pahang runs a programme focusing on HIV prevention, counselling on kicking the drug habit, care, support and outreach activities. Its members also handle the funerals of those whose deaths are related to drug abuse regardless of religion.

“My name is Rosman, I’m 47 years old. I have been abusing varieties of drugs especially Heroin & Meth for the last 30 years. I’ve been to jail for 4 times and Government Rehab Center for 3 times. Even though I really want to quit using drugs, every time after release I could not stay drug free for more than 6 months and relapse back to drug addiction. Today I’m grateful to KOMITED, because this is the longest I’ve stayed drug free. Now I have been drug free for more than 6 years. This is the freedom that I’ve been searching for and I hope I could stay drug free for the rest of my life. My hope is for you to help in this funding, so that many more individual like myself can have the second chance and the opportunity to change their life for the better”.

At the same time, KOMITED came to my school to do prevention program and gave on the truth about drugs.  That make me realize that I was at the verge to become a drug addict. I consider myself very fortunate that I heard the message. Thank you KOMITED''.
